Some of the following adverts are unbelievable. The promotion of smoking and drinking not the worst! That is reserved for the explicit sexism and the belittling of the women featured maybe?

They shouldnt be allowed – and in fact these days they arent, by a long chalk

But 40, 50, 60 years ago they were perfectly acceptable! We often talk but the future of advertising, but the past is as fascinating a topic, and possibly funnier too!

Which is the worst? Or the funniest? Let me know in the comments or Tweet me on @radiojaja

My personal ‘favourite’ is the Cola ad, especially the copy:
“Laboratory tests over the past few years have proven that babies who drink soda during that early formative period have a much higher chance of gaining acceptance and “fitting in” during those difficult pre-teen and teen years. So, do yourself a favor. Do your child a favour. Start them on a strict regimen of cola and other sugary carbonated beverages right now, for a lifetime of guaranteed happiness.”!

I can’t for the life of me work out what’s wrong with the Schlitz beer ad though – am I missing something?

I think the inference is the woman (hands only) is opening the beer for her man, and finding it tough, delicate little flower that she is. So along comes Schlitz to save the day!
I’m finding it hard to find a favourite – I love the free for Chubbies! But the irony of the Camel smoking doctors is hard to beat…

Hi Gaynor! Welcome to the blog. They all have their ‘charm’, and its not too difficult to see where they are coming from. But its equally easy to see where the sorts of protective legislation we take for granted today came from! And be grateful for it too!

They really are incredible Tony. Some are funny and some really are shocking but if you watch ‘Mad Men’ you can see how mis-informed and gullible people were at that time. I suppose the really interesting thing is what are our grandchildren going to be horrified at from the advertising campaigns produced by this generation? I’m with James here and the cola ‘copy’ was the most shocking.

Oh if only we could get away with this stuff today !
Think of it ? ” Why not drink Sunny Delight all through the day every day, you just won’t believe how you’ll feel after just a few short weeks !”

    Etc. Etc.
